Who is a novice thinker?

Aren’t we all thinkers at various levels?

Aren’t we all novices at some things at various times in our lives?

This site is about all of us, with a bias toward my interests and background.

My vision for this site is to share my thoughts and what I have learned and make them visible so that I can both reflect and receive feedback. Exposing one’s thinking to others leaves one vulnerable and helps one grow.

I am an apprentice in the school of knowledge. I consider and examine the information for myself before making decisions.

I, Seth Reiman, am the initial apprentice in this endeavor.

My interests are many, but I am limiting them to physics, philosophy, and learning strategies on this website. I plan to share what I learn in hopes that this information sticks with me to a better extent (Feynman technique), as well as in hopes that some of you reading this find the information helpful.

This website is my attempt to embrace two quotes:

“Don’t explain your philosophy. Embody it”.

Epictetus

“Nothing has such power to broaden the mind as the ability to investigate systematically and truly all that comes under thy observation in life.”

Marcus Aurelius

Most recently, I had a summer internship in 2023 in the physics department at Duke University under the supervision of Dr. Anselm Vossen, where I developed a dihadron analysis framework using ROOT for semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering experiments at the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider being built by the US Department of Energy at Brookhaven National Laboratory. I independently became proficient in C++, Python, and ROOT, utilizing root cause analysis.

I worked with Dr. Diane Markoff in the physics department of North Carolina Central University. During this research project, I worked independently to develop a lab standard operating procedure for hardware and software that would emulate a particle detector and create histograms of radioactive decay.

2023 SPIN Conference Presentation

Presenting my poster at the 2023 SPIN conference in Durham, NC.

The poster I presented:

Novice Thinker

This is my first paper, published in the Proceedings of Science.

Novice Thinker

*Pursuing a degree in physics.

*Graduated from Durham Technical Community College in May 2024 with an Associate’s Degree, Magna Cum Laude.

I am currently attending the University of Michigan, pursuing a degree in physics.

A recent paper for my critical thinking class:

“On the Industrialization and Alienation of Math Education”

Novice Thinker
  1. Become the best version of myself that I can.
  2. Be honest in my self-reflections.
  3. Enroll in a great physics program at a great university, continue developing my research acumen, and achieve a bachelor’s degree.
  4. Achieve a PhD in theoretical physics.
  5. Challenge and potentially overthrow one of the commonly held beliefs in physics.
  6. Give back to younger generations by stimulating interest in physics and the big, beautiful universe.
